The Investigation Hub at Sidney Grove

Week beginning: 6th July

Characteristics of Effective Learning

The children have continued to show a keen interest in spiders, and each day we enjoy checking on the resident spiders that live in the outdoor sheds.

Some of the children listened to The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle and were inspired to create their own spider webs. Using wool and masking tape, they carefully constructed webs while talking about the different shapes, lines and patterns they could see.

The children then explored the model-making area to create their own spiders using a variety of materials. They carefully counted out eight legs for each spider, developing their counting skills while learning about the features of spiders.

Parents as Partners

We shared the story ‘Harry and the Dinosaurs go to School’ with the children and using our own Stegosaurus as a story prop encouraged the children to help Stegosaurus to feel brave enough to go into school! It was lovely to hear their encouraging comments:

”School is gonna be so much fun!’

‘Don’t be sad!’

‘You have to be brave!’

You can do it!’

Through our core text, The Colour Monster, we have been exploring a range of emotions, learning to name different feelings and discussing how they can be linked to life changes, such as starting school.

The children have shown great emotional awareness, recognising that it is normal to experience mixed feelings about different events. Together, we have talked about times when we have felt happy, excited, nervous or worried, and how more than one emotion can be felt at the same time. These discussions have encouraged the children to express their own thoughts and feelings while developing their understanding of the emotions of others.

“I’m a bit worried and scared and still really excited!”

‘I’m a bit sad cos I wanna stay! (at Nursery)

‘My baby makes me happy…but when it is tidy time I am a bit angry!’

‘I’m not scared ‘cos I have got a torch!’
