The Den:

Characteristics of effective learning:

Since the children have shown such an interest in babies/ the home corner, this week we extended this by washing dolls in the water tray.

I painted the babies so they appeared dirty and asked if the children could help me wash them. I filled the tray with warm, soapy water and added some sponges and jugs so the children could play. The children were really keen and came over to investigate!

They used the sponges to create small dabs/ stokes on the babies as they mimicked washing them. As the paint washed off, the children looked closely and observed the paint disappear as they rubbed the baby.

This was a great opportunity to add some contextual vocabulary like “wash, dirty, clean” and “soap”. The children copied these words and used them correctly as they played. We also talked about different facial features/ bossy parts, asking if the children could “wash baby’s feet, tummy” and “head”.

We have added some pets to the home corner to extended the children’s role-play skills. It has been lovely to observe the children interact with the pets by stocking and feeding them. This has been a great way to help language development a ps the children make links to the animal names and a visual prop.

Outdoor learning:

The children have been enjoying outdoor play in the sunny weather! The children have particularly enjoyed the peek-a-boo tower, displaying good gross motor skills as they navigate the steps.

Parents as partners:

To extend the interest in pets, please send some photographs of pets in your household. These will be used in group time next week.

Parents consultations:

Your child’s Key Person will be sending out your child’s assessments or two-year checks for this term over the next week. We will be able to discuss during a parent consultation:

  • your child’s progress assessment,
  • How they have settled this term
  • Any questions you may have from their term assessment or two-year check.
