2-3: The Discovery Hub

In welcome times, we have discussed with the children the weather and what we can see as we have had very wet weather. The children have commented on how they jumped in puddles or needed wellies on while it has been raining. We have had a lovely time meeting new friends this week that will be transitioning over from The Den and we look forward for them to be over on visits more.

Communication and Language

During group times, we have been beginning to explore choosing from photos and resources to plan where we would like to explore. We will be continuing this during group times as a way of the children to express the “choosing” while exploring. The children have explored waiting for their turn as they observe their peers making their choice.

Playing and Exploring

We offered the exploration of gloop this week and the children showed great curiosity with it. The children were a little unsure of the texture at first to touch it so we added spoons to explore. Using the spoons, the children explored scooping the gloop and watched it drip back into the tray.

We have enjoyed many group explorations this week, continuing to love time with the parachute. The children asked for animals to be placed on top of the parachute to bounce them up and down, labelling “monkey turn” or “dog turn”.

The children continue to show a love of dancing as we listen and follow various actions songs. The children listen and watch the videos carefully to observe which action to copy or when to “stop”. Again, it has been wonderful to hear the children communicating with staff to request songs such as “jelly on the plate” and “the stomp song”.

We have been exploring jigsaws this week as the children show concentration to test the different pieces and explore turning them round until they fit. Some of the children explored threading resources, using their fine motor skills to weave the string through the holes.

Outdoor Learning

On Friday, we went on a leaf hunt in the garden and the children showed great interest searching in the garden for the leaves. Once we had a large collection of leaves and sticks we sat down together and looked at what we had found. The children begun to notice the different colours we had collected “red”, “brown” and “yellow”. We looked at how some of the leaves were “big” or “small”. During our exploration, we added in the parachute where the children placed their leaves on top of the parachute. We explored shaking the parachute and watched the leaves fall off. The children enjoyed this as the collected the leaves and threw them back on the parachute.

Staffing updates

This week, Deborah and Lauren have been on their Paediatric First Aid course.

On Thursday, Emma attend a workshop for Launchpad for Literacy – Exploring Auditory and Receptive Language Skill Strands. Thinking about all of the smaller steps involved in children’s hearing and receptive skills.

Parents as Partners

This week our song of the week has been Wind the bobbin. The children have enjoyed singing this song and we have explored singing the song in various speeds as the children ask for it “slow” and “fast”.
