2-3: The Discovery Hub

We have had a very warm week this week in Nursery. Throughout the week we have discussed how to keep safe with the hot and sunny weather, through wearing our hats, having sun cream applied and drinking lots. The children have followed up with these discussions as they have noticed if someone needs to wear a hat.

Playing and Exploring

To keep us feeling cool we have explored with ice in various areas in the water tray and in the outdoors. We have explored the texture of the cool water in our hands and have observed the ice melting in our hands and within the water tray as we noticed the ice disappeared.

We explored with the gloop in the tray with the minibeasts as we observed the gloop dripping back into the tray. We then tested freezing the gloop and explored the difference with the texture. The children explored crumbling the gloop cubes with their hands and then as it warmed up it began to turn to liquid.

The children had a go with helping to make banana milk this week. We looked at the bananas and discussed how we have to ‘peel’ the skin. The children took turns and persisted with peeling the skins. We then discussed how we were going to ‘cut’ the bananas with the children suggesting using a “knife”. We discussed how to keep safe, holding the end of the knife and keeping our fingers out of the way. The children were very pleased with their achievements. We then took turns to add the milk and banana to the blender. Emma then turned the blender on and the children were amazed watching the banana turn into smaller pieces and were so excited to tell their friends and staff what they had made. During snack some of the children tried tasting the milk and were happy with the result.

Outdoor Learning

In the garden, we have taken the opportunity to have some lovely cool water with some juicy oranges to help cool us down. The children loved exploring squeezing and sucking the juice out of the oranges.

We added frozen coloured water in the outdoors which the children used to make marks on the paper. The children and noticed the ice melting onto the paper and commented on the water dripping from the ice blocks.

Parents as Partners

Please can we ask children not to bring in toys or home items into nursery as we do not wish for them to get broken or lost.

It has been lovely to see your observations of the minibeasts you have seen over the last week at home. We hope you have a lovely weekend with the sunshine!
