2-3: The Discovery Hub

Playing and Exploring and Active Learning

This week we have been talking about the Festival of Light Diwali. The children have engaged with many various experiences to learn about the festival.

During our exploration the we looked at books which showed lights in candles and fireworks. The children were very curious with the coloured rice as we added them to the tray one at a time. We explored labelling all of the colours together before mixing them all up.

While exploring in the rice, the children used various containers to scoop, fill and empty with the rice. We noticed when pouring the rice, it created a sound and the children experimented pouring the rice onto the metal containers to create various sounds.

The children have explored rolling clay into a ball before squeezing and pressing the clay as we made our own candles. The children then explored adding coloured rice to the clay as decorations.

In the studio, come of the children showed an interest with painting with stencils to create Rangoli patterns. The children showed amazement when lifting off the stencils “I did it” “wow, look”.

We have watched videos of the celebration as we pointed out all of the lights and decorations. The children showed a great interest with the fireworks, which we will continue to explore in the next few weeks.
