2-3: The Discovery Hub

We have had a very busy week we celebrating Pancake Day and Chinese New Year. The children have been engaging lovely in the activities across the week and have loved learning about the dragon. They have shown lots of curiosity as we explore looking at photos of the celebrations.

Chinese New Year

The children enjoyed exploring in the coloured rice and pasta as they used containers to fill and pour. They tested out using various sized spoons to scoop the rice to see which spoon would fill the bowl.

We had a little taste of some noodles and rice and the children enjoyed this little treat. They found it funny as the children tried sucking up the noodles.

In the garden, we explored using the spray bottles with red and yellow paint to paint the lanterns. The children showed focus as they used two hands to hold the bottle and press the handle. Once the children had sprayed the lanterns, the children directed staff where they would like to hang them on the trees. Some of the children noticed some of the water dripping from the lanterns “oh no… drip… not dry”.

As we explored our Song of the Week Chinese Dragon, we explored using the voiles to use as tails for the dragon and exploring with the instruments to make music. We explored moving around the garden signing the song. The children then suggested singing the song, fast, slow and loud.

We explored painting boxes red to create our very own dragon. The children used the brushes to make sure no area of the box was not painted. After the box had dried, we add some red material to create a tail. The children had a turn holding onto the tail and being the dragon. As the children moved with the dragon, we played some Chinese music to create our very own parade.

Pancake Day

We have had a lovely day exploring creating and tasting pancakes. During group time, we looked at pancakes, jam and lemon juice exploring the packaging and the writing on the items. We discussed how these items came from Asda and some of the children began to discuss “I go to Sainsburys”, “me Asda” and “me go up the escalator” making connections to their own experiences. The children had a turn looking at the pancakes up close in the packet commenting “it cold…been in fridge” and “it soft”. We then discussed how to open the jam with children problem solving “heave” “lift it up” “pull it” “tap tap” and the “spin it (gesturing to twist the lid)”. All of the children had a go at smelling at the jam and lemon and one of the children suggested “it sour”.

During the session, we explored making the batter for pancakes. The children took turns at pouring and mixing the ingredients. We looked at the instructions for the ingredients needed and the children noticed milk, eggs and flour on the images. When adding the eggs to the batter, we problem solved how to crack the egg with the children suggesting to squeeze the egg, tap the egg and then we tried using the spoon. Throughout the exploration the children showed great focus and engagement. We the explored pouring the batter into the pan and discussed how we would cook the pancakes. The children commented “it hot” “be careful” “you need to blow it”.
