2-3: The Discovery Hub

We have had a very busy week this week and is has been lovely seeing the children engaging in the learning. This week has been our “Belong” week and we have been exploring opportunities together with staff and peers.

The children were very lucky to have Lesley and Kay join us from the Glasshouse! They brought along some resources and instruments for us to join in a lovely song time. All of the children engaged in singing new version of the hello song to each other. The children were amazing at sitting and listening to Lesley and Kay as they took turns to try the guitar and ukulele. During our song time, they brought along 5 friends to join us as we sang “5 little friends in a flying saucer”. The children loved bouncing the animals around and they all giggled as they flew off.

Playing and Exploring

We explored mark making on large paper with staff and our peers. The children enjoyed sharing the opportunity with each other and with staff as they shared crayons and spaces on the paper. Staff explored copying the children’s marks and the children very excited when they noticed this and continued to create more marks. During the exploration, the children sustained focus for a long period of time.

This week we have explored listening to music from around the world. We watched videos of dancing and tried to copy the movements along to the music. The children commented on the beautiful outfits and the scenery such as the beach while listening to Hawaiian music.

Communication and Language

Across the week, we have explored looking at the minibeasts and the photos of them to match the insects together. Some of the children asked “what’s that?” wanting to learn the name of the insects. The children have begun to use the names of the minibeasts such as “I found a worm” “look a slug” “spider” “it a bee”.

Outdoor Learning

The children have been very interested with looking for insects in the garden and have shown lots of curiosity to find out more about them. In the garden, the children have searched all over looking for them, they have moved tyres and explored digging in the soil to see what they could find. We gathered all of the minibeasts we could find in the garden to explore closely with the magnifying glasses. Some of the children showed confidence to have a go holding them safely before we returned them to their home. In the bowl, we noticed the worm had left some wiggly lines in the mud from where they had been wiggling.

Parents as Partners

Please can we ask children not to bring in toys or home items into nursery as we do not wish for them to get broken or lost.

The children have shown so much fascination with looking for insects in the garden. While out and about or in the garden, maybe you could look for various insects. The children’s favourites this week have been worms, spiders, woodlice and bees. We would love to see any insects you find at home as we will be continuing to look at them next week.

Reminder we have a staff training day next Friday, 26th June 2026, nursery will be closed to all children.

Our next Stay and Play will be on Thursday 2nd July 10.30-11.30am & 1-2pm. There is a sign-up sheet on the door.

Over the next few weeks we will be sharing the children’s assessments for this term and we will be offering “Sharing the Learning” meetings for a chance to catch up with your child’s Key Person. If you would like to book an appointment for a 10 minute catch up to discuss your child’s interests, learning, progress and next steps of development at nursery please sign up on the door. Please not some staff are on annual leave to check if your Key Person is available.
