2-3: The Discovery Hub

This week has been another wet week where we have been exploring our indoor environment. In some of our outdoor explorations, we explored going on short walks around the outdoor environment and the children noticed the environmental sounds “I can hear birds” and “I can hear rain”.

The children have explored creating a card for Valentines day toady as they explore sharing them with family and their peers. They have explored pouring and filling in the water tray as we added pink foam. The children were excited to observe the water change colour to pink as the foam melted.

Playing and Exploring

The children have enjoyed imaginative play this week in both the indoor and outdoor environment. In the garden, the children initiated making a picnic and invited peers and staff to join in. The children used the pots and pans to collect natural resources of leaves and sticks to use in their imaginative play. Lovely play ideas were shared

“I have chocolate pancakes”

“you want cake?”

“me pizza”

There has also been a large interest with going to the shops as the children select bags from the home corner to collect food items. The children have been excited to share with staff what they have gathered in their collections and engage the staff into their play.

“me going to shops…bye”

“I got toast”

On Wednesday, we found the animals stuck in the gloop. The children were very interested with the material and developed their curiosity to explore touching the material. The children explored scooping the gloop between their fingers and observed it drip from a height. We explored spreading the gloop over the animals and persisted trying to ‘help’ the animals. The children began to use language “cow stuck” “ooo hard help” “look drip”.

Active Learning

Across the week the children have show a great interest in various insects we have found in the indoor and outdoor environment. We have found worms, ladybirds and woodlice. The children have shown curiosity with watching their movements and developed their confidence to have a hold of them comment “gentle” to each other.

The children have explored creating their own animals using mark making tools and sticking materials. From choosing the animal they wanted the children have been able to identify the animals and label their choosing.
