Investigation Hub and Discovery Hub at
Deckham
This week we have been thinking about spring and Easter. In our garden, some of the children noticed new buds growing on the bushes and that some of them had opened up into flowers. A lovely sign that spring has arrived! Can you spot any other signs of spring when you are outdoors?
The children have explored printing at the painting area this week, as they worked together on large paper to explore the marks they created when printing with plastic eggs and stampers.
We have had lots of fun in our sensory tray which was filled with coloured rice and feathers. We scooped and poured using spoons of various sizes to transfer the rice into cake cases and Easter baking trays. Some of the children developed imaginative role-play as they pretended to cook.
In the Investigation Hub this week, the children have been enjoying the story, Handa’s Surprise.
We used our senses to explore some of the fruit from the story – touching, smelling, observing and tasting it! The children predicted what the fruit might look like inside and there was some unexpected surprises – particularly the passion fruit!
“What are those black things inside?” (seeds)
“I think it will be red and green, same as the outside.” (mango)
“It tastes sour!”
“It’s bumpy.” (avocado)
“It’s spiky all over.” (pineapple)
Some of the children helped to prepare snack for their friends this week, with our student Yasmine. Yasmine talked to the children about why healthy food is important for our bodies. The children developed their fine motor skills as they peeled oranges and used a knife to chop bananas.
In the Discovery Hub, the children have been reading Spot’s First Easter, which encourages counting as Spot finds eggs hidden throughout the story.
Sensory Hub
In the Sensory Hub, we have been extending our knowledge of colours and spring time. The children have enjoyed exploring a range of different materials and sticking them onto paper, whilst narrating their experiences.
“It’s a semi circle.”
“Press, press!”
The children have also enjoyed getting messy with paint and learning how glue works.
