Characteristics of Effective Learning

Playing and Exploring

Curiosity…a new resource!

The children spotted some new bicycle tyres in the garden this week. The adults asked the children what they might be for. The children had some excellent ideas:

“hula-hoops!”

”we can hang it on the tree to help us to climb up!”

“a necklace for a giant”

”it’s to fix things”

”it’s for rolling!”

The children showed an overall interest in rolling the tyres down the hill. Adults negotiated safety rules to ensure the tyres did not hurt anyone.

Parents as Partners

VE Day

To explore and celebrate VE Day the children have been creating bunting in the studio. They have painted, printed, cut and stick using the key colours of the Union Jack. We shared some key information about why VE Day is celebrated. The children shared their understanding of the event…

“I saw soldiers at the Metro Centre playing drums”

“When I was on the bus I saw soldiers’ graves. A grave is buried when you die”

On Friday we prepared jam and cucumber sandwiches for a special VE Day snack.

We continued sharing our core text “Jack and the Beanstalk” and measured the giant’s footprint with loose parts! The children were so excited to compare the giant footprint with their own! In the construction area we used a new construction resource from the Shipley Art Gallery to build castles for the giant and beanstalks for Jack to climb.

Outside Learning

This week we have made use of the garden, mud kitchen, allotment, soft-surface and beach area. Today the children enjoyed some water play using the pump to make the water flow and then sieving for “treasure” (stones) There were lots of opportunities for physical development and collaboration and it was a super way to stay cool in the sunshine.

In the story shed the children enjoyed listening to “It’s not just a blanket” and explored using fabric to transform themselves into superheroes, firefighters and bunnies.

In the garden, some children enjoyed using natural materials to create simple patterns.

Reminder– there is a sign up sheet on the Nursery classroom door for anyone who would like to participate in the Inspire Gateshead Primary Schools Run on Friday 23rd May at Saltwell Park. This event is open to children who are starting school in September and your child will need to be accompanied by an adult.
