Week beginning 10th November 2025
The Investigation Hub at Sidney Grove
Parents as Partners
This week we explored learning opportunities around poppies and Remembrance Sunday. The children watched the short CBBC Children’s Remembrance film: a beautiful and evocative animation that sees war as experienced by animals in a WWI battlefield. We discussed the significance of poppies and linked it to the idea that when we fight, people can get hurt. The children shared their own experiences of seeing poppies or having attended special Remembrance events at the weekend.
I some some soldiers!
They blow around in the wind!
You can see a cross…I saw one at Saltwell Park
Fighting…getting hurt…its’ bad!
In their maths focussed learning the children practised using five frames to represent different amounts from 0-5. We made use of our pumpkin seeds to count carefully with 1:1 correspondence and all of the children amazed the staff with their focus and concentration on this task.
For Kindness Day on Thursday the children created beautiful hearts and thought carefully about who they would like to gift them to and why…
My Daddy is my best friend!
I love cuddles with Mam!
‘It’s for Dada… because I love him that’s why!’
Characteristics of Effective Learning -Creative and Critical Thinking
This week the children have shown interest in looking at minibeasts in the garden. The rain brought out many worms of different sizes which the children observed with interest, talking about details they spotted such as small lines on the bodies which they labelled ‘stripes’ and different shades of brown. The children also spotted a ladybird with a small insect beside it. They talked amongst themselves to try to guess what it might be but it was too small to see clearly. Susan took a photograph and enlarged it and the children were able to then identify features such as little black spots. This led them to the conclusion it must be a ‘baby ladybird’. Excellent thinking skills and problem solving in action!
Outdoors Learning
Better late than never we planted our Spring bulbs for the garden. We observed the bulbs describing their shape and size and then discussed what they might need to help them to grow. The children used tools to fill plant pots with soil and then used their fingers to create a small hole to place the bulb into. We said ‘night, night, see you in the Spring time!’ and found a safe place to leave them for the winter.
The children have demonstrated an interest in building houses using loose parts. Using tarpaulins and pegs they have had to solve problems in order to create houses with rooves which covered them and kept them dry. The children had to share the small space inside their houses and to navigate getting in and out without bumping into each other!
Children in Need
The children took part in a range of activities; cutting and creating their own Pudsey ears, decorating biscuits and adding pom-poms with tweezers to a Pudsey Picture. Thank you for all of your support in sending the children in their fantastic outfits today 🙂
