Characteristics of Effective Learning – Active Learning- Keep Trying
Following on from the children’s continued interest in using the body boards Susan created a new challenge to try. She extended a rope across the soft surface and encouraged the children to use their upper body strength to pull themselves along. This requires coordination and core-strength for balance and although some children found this to be tricky at first their resilience and perseverance was amazing!
I pull the rope… it’s good!
It was super to observe lots of collaboration as the children helped each other to achieve this skill and cheered each other on.
Parents as Partners
This week we started some focussed work on the theme of Spring and Easter. We shared the story ‘We’re Going on an Egg Hunt’ The children were so enthusiastic to search for numbered eggs outside in the garden and some children ordered small pictures of eggs one to five independently.
In their creative small group time the children used forks to paint chicks and added features such as feathers and beaks. The children then added additional spring details such as flowers and rainbows and shared their knowledge about Spring…
The baby animals are born at Spring time.
Flowers grow! People go for a walk! Frogs come out of the pond and sit on a log!
In their fine-motor work the children cut out their own bunny ears and we measured carefully to make headbands to stick them onto. This lead to a general interest in making more bunny ears and masks in plan-do-review when the children revisited the skills practised earlier.
Outdoors Learning
In their plan-do-review sessions the children have explored mark-making using spray bottles and coloured water. This was a new mark-making experience and chosen specifically to strengthen muscles, practise hand-eye coordination and generally to support pre-writing movements. The children were excited to explore this new mark-making experience…
‘It gets rid of the chalk and turns different colours’
‘It’s turning blue! Orange and green is making blue’ (we talked about how to make blue!)
‘I want to try purple…you need red and blue to make purple!’
