2-3: The Discovery Hub

As we begin to explore the Autumn changes beginning to happen in the outdoors, we have been bringing the outdoors into the indoor environment. The children have explored adding sticks into the gloop material, using them to scoop up the gloop and observe it dripping from the sticks.

Some of the children accessed using leaves to print paint onto their paper. They explored various ways to add the paint by pressing the leaves onto the paper and rubbing the leaves across the paper.

Outdoor learning

The children continue to explore the new environments in nursery as we walked down to our lower garden space. They have shown great curiosity in the new space and resources offered to them. The children have explored using rollers, paintbrushes and chalk to create marks on the walls.

We introduced spray bottles to the outdoor garden where the children have explored pressing the handle to create a spray of water on the walls. The children showed persistence as they concentrated to press the handle and showed great pride in their achievements commenting “I did it!”.

The children have explored problem solving skills in the garden as they explored rolling balls down the guttering. They tested out ideas as we had different styles and size guttering tubes which some of the balls would not fit. With the small tyres, the children explored rolling them down the path, observing the direction they rolled in to retrieve the tyre and have another go. The children used language such as “it heavy” “need help” and “my turn” during their explorations.

We are very lucky that we can hear and see the trains driving past the nursery. The children are becoming aware of the sound of the passing trains and move eagerly to observe them driving by commenting “hi train” and “bye bye train”. It is lovely to see how excited they have been to observe the trains.

As the children develop new interests in the garden, the children have also been developing their interactions with staff and each other. This week, staff have been able to model the new resources and environment and it has been wonderful to see how the children have been able to transition to the outdoor space. The children have been exploring the resources with staff and peers and have engaged in lovely collaborative imaginative ideas. As the children develop relationships, this week they explored playing hide and seek in the garden. The children took turns to hide around the garden waiting for staff and peers to find them. Lovely communication from the children such as “where are you?”, “I find you” and “find me…”.

Parents as Partners

As the seasons and weather begins to change, can we ask appropriate clothing and footwear is worn as we access the outdoors daily. We have noticed this week, we have a few duplicates of coats. Please can we ask you to write your child’s name in their coat.

If your child has had their clothing changed during their session, their clothes will be placed in a bag on their peg with their name wrote on the bag. Please can we ask you check your child’s peg for any bags of clothing.

Our song this week has been ‘Autumn Leaves are falling down’. This has linked to our observations of the leaves falling off the trees in the garden. We would love to see any observations of any Autumn walks or collections you may have over the weekend. Please feel free to bring in any collections of leaves and sticks the children may want to show to their peers and staff.

Many thanks
