2-3: The Discovery Hub
We hope you had a lovely long weekend, last weekend. We have had a lovely week this week in Nursery and the children have been very busy across the indoors and outdoors. It has been lovely to continue welcoming new children and families to the Discovery Hub this week, and we are all so proud of how well the children are settling into the environment.
Playing and exploring
We have continued to observe the changes to the seeds we planted last week, and we have been excited to see some growth occurring. The children have been able to observe some of the seeds beginning to open and some even starting to grow the beanstalk.
This week, we added shredded paper into the environment and the children have enjoyed this very much. They have explored gathering the paper into their hands, scooping with spoons and transporting the paper. Some the children began to move the paper through their hands and staff model “You are sprinkling” and “Sprinkle, sprinkle” which the children began to use themselves.
Painting has been a popular choice to explore this week, with children finding their aprons independently. We observed some lovely sharing between the children, as they passed the trays of paint between each other. Some of the children began to explain the marks they were creating such as “It my daddy” and “my mammy”. They were all so proud of their paintings and keen to show them to the staff around them.
With the interest of the hunt around the room last week looking for flowers, we continued this again this week with an animal hunt. The children were very keen to search the room looking for the animals and created the noise for each animal as they found them.
Outdoor Learning
We have explored in all weathers this week, wind, sun and rain and the children have enjoyed every moment!
This week we introduced the see saw in the Blossom Garden and the children have loved having a go sitting next to their friends as the move up and down. The children copied staff’s language commenting “See saw, see saw”, “Up and down” and “Hold on”. It has been lovely to observe the children interacting with each other by inviting friends onto the see saw, hold out hands to help their friends and moving along to allow more friends to sit down.
As we have explored the story The Three Billy Goats Gruff, the children explored “trip tapping” across the bridge. As a staff retold the story, the children explored walking up the stairs saying “trip, trap” and waited for staff to ask “Who’s that trip trapping over my bridge?”. They then followed on the story walking down the steps over the lovely green grass and pretended to eat the grass.
