Investigation Hub and Discovery Hub at Deckham
This has been an exciting week learning about two special celebrations: Shrove Tuesday and Chinese New Year.
On Tuesday, the children had a wonderful time following a recipe to make delicious pancakes!
Cooking and baking offers a wide range of valuable learning opportunities. The children practised listening carefully and following instructions, explored measurements and counting, and developed their physical skills as they scooped and poured the ingredients. They also observed how ingredients change when they are mixed together and how heat or cooling changes them during the cooking process.
This week we have also been celebrating Chinese New Year, which marks the Year of the Horse. The children enjoyed sharing stories about this special celebration and explored a range of objects, including traditional clothing and decorations, to deepen their understanding.
To develop their fine motor skills, the children practised using chopsticks to pick up items of different sizes, building their hand=eye coordination and control.
They also chose from a wide variety of materials to decorate their own lantern pictures, selecting different colours and textures to create their individual designs.
The children enjoyed watching the Chinese New Year story about the great race and enthusiastically retold the tale using props and masks.
The final showstopper of the week was our Chinese dragon dance which the children performed with great excitement and enthusiasm.
