Investigation Hub and Discovery Hub at Deckham

We have been further exploring our core story ‘A Squash and a Squeeze’ this week within the Investigation Hub. The children are beginning to use repeated refrains and actions from the story, to support their recall. We have been exploring the meaning of the vocabulary ‘squash’ and ‘squeeze’ through exploring squashing and squeezing playdough and a range of objects. We discovered that we could squash and squeeze soft objects but we couldn’t with hard objects. We experimented to see how many objects we could squash into different sized containers.

We also used citrus squeezers to squeeze oranges to make juice. The children tasted the orange juice and expressed whether they enjoyed it or not!

Within the Discovery Hub, the children have been continuing to enjoy stories and songs which have supported their language development as they name animals and talk about the sounds they make.

Outdoor Learning

The children have continued to explore the new resources within the outdoor area. The digging and investigation area has been particularly popular. The children have explored what minibeasts they can discover under the logs. They noticed that when it rains, it was more challenging to find any minibeasts. One child suggested that they were “Hiding in their houses”. They looked in holes in the trees as they suggested that a spider might be inside. The children used magnifying glasses to enhance their investigation experience.
