2-3: The Discovery Hub

This week has been Road Safety week in nursery and we have been discussing with the children how to keep safe near the road. We have been sharing videos and books with the children to show how to stay safe by holding a grown ups hand and watching the traffic lights. This week our song of the week has been Stop, Look and Listen where we have been exploring using actions for stop, look and listen.

In the studio, the children have explored creating marks using the vehicles in the paint. They explored dipping the train in their colour of choice and then explored rolling the vehicles across the paper. During the exploration, the children displayed some lovely sharing of the paint and the vehicles.

Outdoor Learning

We explored walking across to the community gardens this week. The children were very curious with the new surroundings pointing to features of interest. As we walked around the garden, we observed the traffic moving up and down the bank. The children noticed the traffic lights changing colour shouting “stop” when the light was on red and “go” when the light was on green. We enjoyed exploring in the snow that we had found on the ground, creating footprints with excitement. Some of the children began to notice the snow melting in their hands “it’s gone”. During our look, around the garden the children had noticed a Christmas tree so we moved closer to observe the lights twinkling on the tree.

As the snow continued across the week, we discussed how to keep warm when outdoors. We have been encouraging the children to help dress and undress in outdoor clothing. The children were excited to see the snow in the garden and enjoyed creating footprints and handprints in the fresh snow. The children also explored the snow indoors as they explored scooping and filling the snow into various containers, discussing how it felt on their fingers.

There has been an interest with mark making in the garden as we explore with chalks. The children explored using the chalks to create exploratory marks on the ground and fence. Staff modelled using the chalks to create circles on the floor. The children then explored jumping in the circles taking turns to have a go jumping. Some of the children joined in with staff counting to 10.

Communication and Language

As we have been thinking about the traffic lights, we have been exploring activities listening for “stop” and “go”. The children have been very engaged in these activities and have joined in commenting “stop” and “go”. We added traffic lights and road markings to the construction area, the children showed curiosity to this and explored creating a road and using the traffic lights to stop the cars.

While exploring with the ice indoor, staff introduced vocabulary such as “dripping”, “ice”, “cold” and “freezing”. The children explored breaking the ice and tried to release the resources such as spoons which had frozen in the water outside. Some of chest children begun to notice the ice melting as they pointed out the water in the water tray.
