Characteristics of Effective Learning
Painting in the studio- Creative and Critical Thinking
In the studio the children can always access their own paint and tools. They always amaze us with their creativity as they work. This week, adults focussed on engaging in conversation with the children as they painted. The staff observed a wide range of vocabulary in the children’s comments about their work.
‘look at this for my family, it’s a storm!”
’Cat, I love cat, cuddle it! White and black cat, and whiskers!’
’It’s a spider… a spider has 8 legs!’
‘I made different patterns, love hearts and spots. It looks beautiful…actually!’
Parents as partners
We shared the core text ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and acted out parts of the story. The children enjoyed retelling the story using props and role-playing throwing the beans out of the window. Outside we have been planting beans and making predictions about what will grow.
We have been singing ten green bottles and using props to count down from 10 to 1. We also carefully counted the magic beans using our ten frame and our number lines.
Outside Learning
The children have been helping Steven to begin work in our allotment. They have been discussing safety rules such as wearing gloves and washing their hands afterwards. They looked at a variety of tools and started digging out weeds to prepare the allotment for some planting! They started identifying some of the plants and flowers. We are so excited to start planting soon!
In the warmer weather we thought of creative ways to help the children stay cool. For example, they have enjoyed using tarpaulins to create shade and playing water games with the parachute!
We were so lucky to have a visit from Steph and her baby this afternoon. The children were so happy to see her and had so many questions about the baby! What a lovely way to end the week!
Next week, Nursery will be closed on Monday for the bank holiday, so we look forward to seeing the children again on Tuesday 6th May. Have a lovely, long weekend!
