Bensham Grove Community Nursery School

Bensham Grove Community Nursery School, established in 1929, has a long tradition of providing high quality education for 3-5 year olds, being one of the first Nursery Schools to open on Tyneside.  The original building was destroyed by fire and replaced in 1969.  The Nursery moved to a purpose built early years premises in December 2004.

Today Bensham Grove Community Nursery School remains the only maintained Nursery School in Gateshead and provides high quality Nursery education for 3-4 year olds living in the borough. The school is led by a qualified Headteacher, with a governing body. The school offers distinct education sessions, delivered by highly experienced and qualified staff, including qualified teachers. As a Gateshead Local Authority maintained Nursery school the school has close links with the Head teachers and staff of local feeder schools.

In November 2013 0ur school was inspected under the new Ofsted framework introduced in September 2013, when new changes were implemented to judge outstanding schools. To be judged outstanding from September 2013 an outstanding school now has to demonstrate outstanding teaching and show that children make excellent progress with a high proportion making or exceeding expected progress compared to national averages.  This is the case at our school and the Ofsted Inspector found that

“staff work very successfully as a team to provide exceptional learning”

“each child receives the appropriate care and support they need to make excellent progress in all areas of learning”

“children make rapid progress in all areas of learning.”

We are delighted that the Ofsted inspector also recognised that

“children are safe and happy at School”

“love their time in nursery”,

relationships with staff are very positive and children feel secure”

and that  parents

“are seen as having a crucial part in their child’s learning.”

Behaviour and safety were also found to be excellent.

In 2014 our school was designated a Department of Education 2 year old champion school after a year long government pilot providing 2 year olds with funded nursery education. In 2015 Mrs Denise Henry was awarded DFE  National Leader in Education status  and our school was designated a National Support School. We offer early years training and support both locally and nationally.

Today the Nursery School and the National Charity Action for Children continue to work closely together to provide the core offer of integrated education and care for children aged two months to 5 years. As a nursery school, the education sessions are available during Local Authority set school term times and parent/carers may be offered morning and afternoon sessions flexibly.
